Update: Mallory declared competent to stand trial in Hanover murder case
Brian MallorySaraJane HakopianThe man charged with the brutal stabbing death of a Montpelier woman who took him into her home last year will go on trial for murder and grand larceny in September. Hanover Circuit Court J. Overton Harris set a two-day jury trial for Sept. 23 and 24 after hearing that extensive psychiatric assessments of Brian Mallory showed him able to assist in his defense and that he was not insane at the time of Sarajane Hakopian's death. Hakopian, a free-spirited person known for her kindnesses toward all people, befriended Mallory, a felon with a long history of violent crimes, and began co-habiting with him in the home she shared with her two teenaged children. No motive for the killing has been made public. A neighbor discovered her body in the bedroom she shared with Mallory as Hakopian's son sat alone downstairs, unaware his mother had been killed.

Brian S. MallorySarajane HakopianSarajane Hakopian was discovered dead Monday afternoon by a neighbor inside her log-cabin-style home. Hanover sheriff's officials have not yet released a cause of death, but they are investigating the case as a homicide. Brian S. Mallory, 42, was arrested in a bus station in Jacksonville, Fla., shortly before 1 a.m., Tuesday. Hakopian's minivan was found nearby. Mallory is charged with grand larceny but is under investigation in Hakopian's death, police said. The minivan had several bumper stickers, among them "coexist." The word exemplifies Hakopian's love and care for all people, her friends said. But it also may have helped lead to her death. Police described Mallory as Hakopian's boyfriend. The friendship with the convicted felon began when Mallory worked cutting Hakopian's grass. His hired-hand status blossomed into something more serious that saw Mallory move from his squalid life on a dead-end road to a loving home where chickens, roosters and a pig had free range of the house. - (Newsroom) - (Black-on-white)

Bucking 20-year minimum, Cass County judge sentences convicted rapist to only 5 years
Jermaine Quincy JonesJudge Wickham CorwinTremaine Quincy JonesFargo - In a rare departure from the mandatory minimum prison sentence required by state law, a Cass County judge on Monday spared a 20-year-old convicted of forcible rape from 20 years in prison, instead sentencing him to five years. Without Judge Wickham Corwin’s ruling, Jermaine Quincy Jones could have been sentenced to anywhere from 20 years to life in prison without parole for his Class AA felony gross sexual imposition conviction in February by a Cass County District Court jury. At the hearing Monday, Corwin said to sentence Jones to 20 years in prison would be the “equivalent of another of this young man’s lifetimes,” and instead gave him a five-year prison term, with another five years suspended. The downward departure required that the judge find that the 20-year sentence would represent a “manifest injustice.” The five-year sentence is the absolute lowest a judge can order for AA felony gross sexual imposition. He and his half brother, Tremaine Quincy Jones, were both charged with raping two 13-year-old girls at a south Fargo party

West Rogers Park rabbi charged in homo sexual assault of 15-year-old boy
Larry DudovitzRabbi Aryeh Dudovitz (AKA: Larry Dudovitz) was arrested on charges of molesting a teenage boy back in 2006.
This is a case in which took nearly six years for this convicted sex offender to be prosecuted due to pressure from various rabbonim in Chicago. It is important to note a select few were instrumental in having this case prosecuted. In the Jewish orthodox world instead of calling the police immediate when there are allegations of sex crimes, it is common place to contact a local orthodox rabbi for advice in how to proceed. The Rabbinical Chicago Rabbinical Council created the Ad Hoc Bait Din of Chicago, which is a special religious court to handle such cases. This special Beis Din was aware of the allegations against Dudovitz for nearly six years, yet according to reports the rabbonim never done anything to warn parents living within the orthodox Jewish community of any potential dangers Rabbi Aryeh Dudovitz posed to children he came in contact with.

  • Israel grapples with wave of illegal (black) north African migrants
Many residents are demanding that the government take control of the estimated 56,000 undocumented immigrants, mostly from northern Africa, who authorities say have settled in the country. They claim the local crime rate has risen and that many streets are no-go areas for Israelis, especially at night. Anger has spilled over into outright violence in recent weeks. Early last month, about 1,000 Israelis took to the streets to demand that African immigrants be deported in the Tel Aviv neighborhood of Hatikva. The protesters yelled “Blacks out,” attacked Africans on the street and broke windows of stores belonging immigrants. About 1,700 migrants – including women and children – are already being held in a new, purpose-built "detention center" in the Negev Desert.

Mother of slain Cape Coral woman sues over wrongful death
Connell CarrollDanielle BlackburnNicole SmithThe 2011 killing of 22-year-old Nicole Smith could have been prevented, a lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges, if Lee County probation officers and sheriff’s deputies fulfilled their legal duties. Smith, of Cape Coral, was shot to death two years ago Wednesday by ex-boyfriend Connell Carroll, who was charged with second-degree murder. In a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Lee County circuit court, Smith’s mother, Ann Seaburg, accuses the sheriff’s office, probation department, Lee County Board of County Commissioners and two probation employees of negligence that contributed to Smith’s death. “She thought that the police were going to protect her,” Seaburg said. “And that didn’t happen.” Carroll had a prior history of domestic violence and had abused another girlfriend, Danielle Blackburn, who got a restraining order against him in 2006. He violated the order twice over a three-year period, according to Seaburg’s lawsuit. Blackburn was murdered in 2009. Carroll was the lead suspect but was never charged. - (Black-on-white)

A punch from nowhere, and Michael Daniels' rough life ends in a senseless beating
Michael DanielsThe first blow struck Michael Daniels on the side of his head, a witness said. Daniels staggered and looked around. There was no one in front of him. The kid who threw the punch was young, maybe 10 or 12, and had lunged from the side to strike Daniels, according to a witness. The kid and four other teenage boys ran across the street and stopped to look back at Daniels. Then a taller kid in a red hoodie, the hood tied close around his face, and the kid who threw the first punch ran back toward Daniels. The smaller kid waved back the others, a witness said. When the two reached Daniels, the bigger kid in the hoodie started swinging. Three punches and a kick dropped Daniels to his knees, broke his glasses and left him sprawled on the sidewalk, said Joe Brown, who says he saw the attack from an upstairs window. Police also say the attack was unprovoked. So without an arrest, the kids' motivation remains a mystery. Brown was asked if he thought the youths were motivated by race. The attackers are black, police say; the victim was white. "Black people are attacked in this neighborhood, too," Brown said. Daniels had grown up on Shonnard Street. His father was Irish, his mother was Mohawk, McIntyre said.
