Forbidden romance, a heated argument and a grisly Staten Island murder
Dempsey Hawkins Susan JacobsonSTATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In the summer of 1975, Susan Jacobson and Dempsey Hawkins, neighbors in Port Richmond, began dating at a time when interracial romance was still frowned upon. But the two young teens -- she, an attractive and vivacious 13-year-old white girl, and he, a handsome, smart 15-year-old black male -- didn't see color. Hawkins was Ms. Jacobson's first boyfriend. Their romance blossomed into the fall and winter, but took an unexpected turn when Ms. Jacobson became pregnant. She was still in intermediate school. So, in January, 1976, Ms. Jacobson underwent an abortion. Afterward, her parents -- William, and his late wife, Ellen -- recommended that their daughter and Hawkins take a break from each other and see other people. If their relationship was meant to be, they could always get back together, Ms. Jacobson's parents reasoned.
TRAGIC END TO RELATIONSHIP
And the relationship did end several months later, but in a way no one (except you, dear NNN readers) could have imagined. On May 15, 1976, Hawkins, then 16, strangled Ms. Jacobson to death with a shirt. She was 14. Prosecutors said Hawkins killed Ms. Jacobson during a quarrel in which she sought to break off from him. Hawkins then hid her body in a 55-gallon oil barrel inside an underground bunker at a former Mariners Harbor shipyard. Ms. Jacobson's grieving family, whom Hawkins pretended to aid, searched relentlessly for Susan's body for months. They even sought a nationally-known psychic's help. But her decomposed corpse wasn't recovered for 22 months -- and then, by chance. Three boys came across Ms. Jacobson's skeletal remains on March 25, 1978, as they were exploring in the area. Hawkins, a 52-year-old native of England, has spent the last 34 years in prison for murdering the Prall Intermediate School student. And he'll remain behind bars at least two more years. - (Black-on-white)

(White female) Irish Tourist Tearfully Confronts (black) Man Who Attacked Her
Alisha Jordan Kevin BynumNEW YORK — A woman went through an emotional confrontation in court in the Bronx Friday, as she came face-to-face with the man who attacked her. Alisha Jordan broke down in tears after she bravely faced Kevin Bynum. “Within the span of one night, my entire life changed,” she said in a victim impact statement court. Jordan, 23, was visiting from Ireland in 2012 when Bynum hit her in the face with a slab of concrete, after a night out with friends. She returned to New York on Friday so she could tell Bynum in person just how horribly he hurt her. “I suffered extensive injuries, including a fractured skull which required 10 metal plates inserted into my head, broken cheek bones, broken orbital bones, a crushed nose and cracked teeth — and all for no reason at all,” she said. Jordan underwent several surgeries to reconstruct her face. The attack, random and unprovoked, left Jordan physically and emotionally scarred. “I sat and cried almost every night about how this attack disfigured my face, and the fear of you that I lived in was crippling,” she said. Jordan said she has since moved on with her life, but the horror of that night will live with her forever. - (Black-on-white)

Hobbs, 33, was convicted Dec. 12 of first-degree murder in the Nov. 6, 2010, shooting death of Harris at Cumberland Pawn Shop on Grove Street. Jurors deliberated for nearly three hours and 40 minutes over two days on whether to sentence Hobbs to death or life in prison. Members remained deadlocked Thursday with 11 favoring death, according to two jurors and District Attorney Billy West. The remaining juror told fellow jurors he could no longer fairly consider the death penalty. Cheryl Harris turned away in her seat, refusing to make eye contact with the man who killed her son. - (Black-on-white)
