Plea deal in Elyria murder case upsets defendant, family
Michael C. StumpBrady PhillipsELYRIA — Brady Phillips was not happy with his plea deal Monday, cursing in court and insulting a prosecutor, but he still went through with a deal that calls for him to serve 14 years in prison for his role in a botched 2009 robbery that left two men dead. Phillips, 44, has long insisted he shouldn’t be facing murder charges for deaths of Hermino Serrano and Michael Stump, who were killed after Serrano and Phillips forced their way into Stump’s David Drive apartment Dec. 20, 2009. The pair had planned to rob Stump of cash and prenoscription drugs that they thought were in a safe there. According to Elyria police, Serrano pistol-whipped Stump and, during the ensuing struggle, shot him in the head. David McDonough, who was in the apartment when the robbery began, managed to get a gun and shoot Serrano. McDonough was shot in the stomach but survived. During the gunfight, Phillips and others in the apartment fled, but Phillips was arrested within days of the killings and charged with murder. Although Phillips didn’t actually kill anyone, he faced felony murder charges because he was involved in criminal conduct that led to a killing. - (Black-on-white)

Fight over Confederate flag ends in criminal charges
Tajaun D. BoatnerRACINE — A Confederate flag hanging in a Racine resident’s house reportedly led to a fight that ended with a man forcing his way into the home to tear it down. The Racine Police Department responded to the 1300 block of Center Street on Friday afternoon. The caller said Tajaun D. Boatner, 37, of Racine, had confronted her at her house about a Confederate flag hanging in her window and eventually pushed her down, the complaint said. In a later interview with the police, the resident said Boatner had politely asked her to take the flag out of her kitchen window, and she moved it to her bathroom window, the complaint said. They both began yelling and the resident had called Boatner a racial slur, the complaint said. The argument ended after Boatner reportedly walked up her front porch, pushed her down, and walked into the house to remove the Confederate flag, according to the complaint. Boatner reportedly told an officer he had politely asked the owner of the Confederate flag to take it down, but instead she moved it to a different window. The officer asked for more details, and Boatner became argumentative, according to the complaint. Boatner reportedly struggled against officers to avoid being handcuffed. Boatner would not spread his feet so the police could pat him down for weapons, so two officers forced him to move his feet, the complaint said. After police arrested him, Boatner tried to resist getting into the car, and he reportedly kicked at the officers as they tried to close the door of the vehicle. - (Drudge) - (Black-on-white)

Lee Turner Jr.Randy Leo ChaneyEdward GurtnerBATON ROUGE, LA - After being found guilty for a 2011 double murder at an auto parts store in Baton Rouge, a judge has sentenced Lee Turner, Jr. to death by lethal injection. Turner and his attorney were in court Monday and filed a motion for a new trial. The motion for a new trial was denied and the sentencing phase continued. "In my opinion, based on what this person did, this is the only appropriate, just decision," said East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore. In May, Turner was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two men during a robbery at CarQuest Auto Parts on Airline Highway in 2011. A few days later, a jury recommended he be sentenced to death. "This defendant has never accepted responsibility, never reached out whatsoever to this office or the victims’ families and now seeks again to blame everyone else for his behavior, which is completely unacceptable," Moore said. Edward Gurtner, 43, and Randy Chaney, 54, were found dead in a back room of the store on March 27, 2011. Both were helping out at the store, but worked at other CarQuest locations. Coming out of court Monday, members of Gurtner’s family described the last four years as very long. "We all miss him tremendously, we always will," said Gurtner’s step-father Nick Dunman. "I don’t know if we ever will have closure, but we will start healing now." - (Black-on-white)

(Sagging Pants) Friend of Michael Brown is shot by police in Ferguson after he used a stolen handgun to fire on officers during a protest to mark the one-year anniversary of the 18-year-old's controversial death
Tyrone Harris JuniorTyrone Harris JuniorA friend of Michael Brown is in a 'critical, unstable condition' after being shot by police when he used a stolen handgun to fire on officers during a protest to mark the one-year anniversary of the 18-year-old's controversial death. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said that plainclothes officers were tracking the man at around 11:15pm, while several hundred people gathered on West Florissant Street to take part in the demonstration. He added that the man approached the officers, who were in an unmarked police car and opened fire. The officers returned fire from inside the vehicle. They then pursued the man on foot. The chief said the man again fired on the officers and all four fired back. The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Tyrone Harris Junior by his father, who revealed that his son was a 'real close' school friend of the late Michael Brown. 'We think there's a lot more to this than what's being said,' Harris Senior was quoted as saying in local media reports. Footage shot by protester Tony Rice, who was live-tweeting near a McDonald's under the Twitter name @search4swag, showed a black man lying face down on the floor with his hands cuffed behind his back and a large blood stain on his torso. Two police officers can be seen standing over him with their guns drawn but do not assist him.
Police shoot and critically injure man they say opened fire during Ferguson anniversary protests
Tyrone Harris JuniorFERGUSON, Mo. — A man who was shot and critically injured by police here after authorities said he opened fire at officers was in critical condition Monday, his father said, even as questions remained about what sparked gunfire amid protests marking the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of (black thug) Michael Brown, an "unarmed" 18-year-old, by a white Ferguson police officer (in self-defense). The late-night shooting was a violent coda to a mostly peaceful day of protests and vigils commemorating a year since Brown was shot and killed, an event that thrust this small suburb of St. Louis into the center of a national conversation on how police officers use lethal force toward minorities. It also heightened fears about what the latest bloodshed could do to a tense community that has repeatedly been unsettled by unrest over the last year. Activists have a day of civil disobedience planned in Ferguson on Monday. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the man shot by his officers had opened fire on an unmarked police SUV shortly before midnight. While police have not named him, the man shot by authorities was identified by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and other local outlets as Tyrone Harris Jr. Belmar said they believe the man is about 20 years old.
Belmar said police were responding to reports of looting on West Florissant Avenue, which served as the focal point for the protests and unrest that followed Brown’s death last year and where stores were burned and looted on several nights. Tensions began to increase at about 8 p.m. local time. With most of those who came to Ferguson to demonstrate gathered at a rap concert and a panel discussion, groups of young men began breaking into storefronts along West Florissant.
Even as protesters and police were facing off nearby, two groups that were apparently involved in some kind of feud began firing at each other, Belmar said. He said between 40 and 50 shots were fired over about 45 seconds. Police were not clear on why the two groups were fighting, Belmar said.
That shooting was followed by another burst of gunfire at around 2 a.m. near the Canfield Green apartment complex, right near where Brown was shot. Two young men — 17 and 19 years old — were shot at around that time.
Meanwhile, Paul Hampel, a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was beaten and robbed while reporting on a break-in happening on West Florissant. “I got swarmed, beaten down really bad,” he told the Post-Dispatch.

(Another Tyrone Harris Jr.) Medical examiner ID’s suspect in Route 51 shootout with police
Tyrone Harris JrTyrone Harris JrPITTSBURGH — The medical examiner’s office has identified a rifle-wielding man who was killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers after shooting at people and carjacking a vehicle in Pittsburgh Monday morning. Lt. Edward Cunningham of the Zone 3 Police Department said the incident started just after 10 a.m. with a report of shots fired in the area of Jucunda Street. The medical examiner’s office identified the suspect in Monday's shootout with police as 20-year-old Tyrone Harris Jr.
Chief Cameron McLay said the suspect fired upon a vehicle on Route 51 with two people inside. “At approximately 10:18, the 911 center received another report that an actor fired upon an occupied vehicle,” McLay said. A man in that vehicle was injured and a woman was uninjured. Both were able to flee the scene. A man later reported that his vehicle was carjacked. McLay said the carjacker then fired on an approaching sheriff's deputy, hitting his windshield. "This was a very dangerous situation for the City of Pittsburgh. I was deeply concerned for the welfare of this community," McLay said. A woman was taken to a hospital after a collision with a pursuing law enforcement vehicle. After the vehicle was stopped in traffic in the area of Bausman Street and Route 51, the man fired on approaching officers who returned fire, and he died minutes later.

(Black) Boyfriend allegedly choked, killed (white) girlfriend in Brooklyn Park, Minn.
Toby Nicholas ClarkeKrista AmbersA mother of three was killed in her Brooklyn Park home around 3 a.m. on Thursday. And police say her live-in boyfriend is to blame. This was an all-too-familiar scenario where the family noticed bruising and confronted 36-year-old Krista Ambers, but she would lie -- too afraid of her abuser to come forward. Toby Nicholas Clark, 37, has a history of domestic abuse charges and an order for protection filed against him. Police were called to the home near 84th Court and Douglas Drive on a report of an unconscious person. By the time they arrived to the home, Ambers didn’t have a pulse and had injuries around her neck and arms. The medical examiner said the cause of her death was strangulation. Clarke was arrested by police and told them the two were having rough sex, and admitted to choking her. But the victim's son, Deanthony Ambers, said Clarke is only saying that to make it look like a mistake. “I want everyone to know that that's a lie,” Deanthony Ambers said. "That man took my mom's life for no reason and it was not an accident. He purposely did that to her." Deanthony said his mother was a victim of domestic abuse and believes she tried to call police, but Clarke took the phone away before she could get any help. - (Black-on-white)

(Black) Man charged in (White) Birmingham detective's beating; outrage follows support of attack on social media
Janard Shamar CunninghamBirmingham detectiveBirmingham detectiveA Center Point man with a violent past is now charged with attempted murder in the pistol-whipping of a Birmingham police detective during a traffic stop Friday morning. Police today identified the suspect as 34-year-old Janard Shamar Cunningham, also known as Janaris Shavar Cunningham. He has at least a half dozen convictions dating back to 1999, and as many arrests in which charges were dismissed during the same time period. Cunningham is charged in the beating of a detective who is a six-year veteran of the force. Authorities said Cunningham stole the detective's gun and then repeatedly hit him in the head until the detective stopped moving.
Not long after the attack, photos began to surface on social media showing the detective lying face down on the pavement. Another photo showed him bloody and kneeling, but awake. In some cases on Facebook, the photos were accompanied by words of support for whoever beat the detective. That, police say, is outrageous. Officers are angry that any photos were shown at all, but even more so that there were some who mocked the incident. "He was laying there lifeless and people were standing around taking pictures,'' said Birmingham police Sgt. Heath Boackle, president of the Fraternal Order of Police. "If the tables were turned, and that was a suspect lying there, they would be rioting." "If the officer would have shot him, then he would have shot an 'unarmed man.' Instead, he took the gun from the officer,'' Boackle said of Friday's incident. "The officer had every right to shoot him. We're lucky we're not talking about him killing the officer." - (Black-on-white)

Blind (White) woman robbed in broad daylight by cowardly black parasite predator purse-snatcher
black purse snatcherGina Walters CHARLOTTE, NC - Something many of us take for granted is the same thing that may have made Gina Walters a target when she says she was robbed in the middle of the day on a busy street. "I should be aware of my surroundings and I am most of the time, except for what I cannot see," Walters said. Walters is legally blind. Because of that, she can't drive, so she often walks to the convinience store on Craighead road in North Charlotte. But Tuesday afternoon, her stroll home from the corner store wasn't so routine when a man approached her asking for directions "I was just trying to be nice and I told him that Sugar Creek Road was that way," Walters said. But in a split second their pleasant exchange did changed. "I had a change purse that was on my wrist and he took it off of me and stole it and ran across the street," Walters said. "I started screaming and crying frantically". In broad daylight, on a busy street, Walters says she was robbed of her credit cards, multiple forms of ID and nearly 300 dollars. "He really made it hard on me by stealing what he did. The only income i get is social security because of my vision I can't work," Walters said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers with the North Tryon division responded and are currently investigating. But looking back, Walters remembers seeing the man in line at the store just moments before his attack. "When I was opening my change purse, he probably saw the cash I had in it," Walters said. But she never expected she'd find herself a victim and wants to warn others of the danger. "I feel like he took advantage of a vulnerable young woman, that could happen to anyone," Walters said. Walters says there is surveillance video of the man inside the convience store that has been handed over to police. He's described as an African-American male in his 20's. - (Black-on-white)

Attack for ‘being white’ leads to hate crime charges for (Somali Black Muslim) cab driver
Mahad Abdinoor AbdiST. LOUIS, MO – A renegade cab driver now faces hate crime charges after reportedly attacking a man for being white. Mahad Abdinoor Abdi is the same suspect that was exposed in a report after witnesses said he threatened to decapitate police officers. These are extremely rare charges because prosecutors say hate crimes can be very hard to prove. In this case, according to this probable cause statement, the victim reports that Abdi attacked him Wednesday only because the victim was white. The cab commission revoked his license after Abdi reportedly threatened to chop the heads off police officers. He is already facing assault charges for threats. Abdi now faces two hate crime charges – property damage and assault motivated by discrimination. Court documents say the victim did not know Abdi. He was sitting on the tailgate of his truck when Abdi put him in a headlock and said. “He wanted to kill the victim because (he) was white.” The latest reported assault happened within a mile of where we first followed Abdi in his unauthorized cab. He faces the property hate crime charge because the victim reported that he later watched Abdi slashing the tires of his truck. - (Hatecrimes) - (Black-on-white)
