Speedway community remembers (White) man shot (by black) over lottery money
Cameron TibbsDavid BowmanINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Speedway community plans to gather at the high school Friday night to remember 2003 graduate David Bowman. Bowman was shot and killed Saturday at the Phillips 66 gas station. Cameron Tibbs, 17, turned himself in to police this week for the shooting. Prosecutors are charging Tibbs as an adult for the murder. "(Bowman) had a passion for soccer as well as a passion for people, having fun and he was just a very fun loving kid,” Bowman's father, William Bowman, said about his son. Saturday night, Bowman went to cash two winning tickets at the gas station totaling $150. On his way out, he dropped the money and someone else picked it up. When Bowman went to get the money back, he got shot. “It just doesn’t make sense you can kill someone over $150," Michael Bowman said. A friend of David Bowman, Sheena Bannon, started a GoFundMe page on behalf of the family. - (Black-on-white)

Andrew CoffeeChristopher LesterGIFFORD, Fla. - UPDATE: Indian River County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Lester was released from the hospital Friday evening. Investigators say Lester was shot Friday morning by Andrew Coffee. The incident happened during a traffic stop. Investigators say Coffee was pulled over because he had no tag on his scooter. "As he knocked the deputy down and sucker punched, he continued to stand over him and attempted to end his life," Loar said. Coffee is no stranger to the law. He was released from prison last May for an attempted murder conviction from back in 1993. "It reminds us of the dangers that are faced everyday in law enforcement. It is a war on the streets and I'm sick of it," Loar said. It's unclear how Coffee, a convicted felon, was able to obtain the gun. Coffee remains hospitalized with wounds to the torso and leg. - (Black-on-white)

Life sentence upheld in 2012 double homicide at Wichita Dollar General
Marquis J. MarshallZachary "Zach" HuntHenry “Hank” HarveyThe Kansas Supreme Court on Friday upheld the capital murder conviction of a Wichita man who shot and killed an employee of a Dollar General Store and a grandfather shopping inside in 2012. Marquis J. Marshall, in his appeal, claimed he didn’t get a fair trial when he was tried for the Nov. 30 slayings of Zachary Hunt and Henry Harvey because Sedgwick County District Court officials didn’t order him to undergo a competency evaluation or look more deeply into his requests for a new lawyer. He also claimed a judge misspoke when he read instructions for deliberations to his jury. But justices, in a unanimous decision, rejected those arguments, saying they found no evidence to support Marshall’s claims.
Marshall walked into the Dollar General at 13th and Oliver in Wichita shortly after 8 p.m. the night of the shootings with a 22-caliber gun in hand. He shot Hunt, who was ringing up Harvey’s purchases, three times and then fired three more rounds into Harvey’s back. Harvey had gone to Dollar General to purchase candy for his grandchildren. - (Black-on-white)

Terrence L. JenkinsShelly FillionHarry Fillion, Shelly's ex-husbandBALTIMORE —A man charged with murdering his girlfriend in Essex was also charged in a second killing in Baltimore City, police said. Baltimore County police said Terrence L. Jenkins, 49, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Shelly Fillion, who was found Monday at her house on Skipjack Court in Essex. Police said Fillion had suffered traumatic injuries. Police on Monday did not specify a motive, but quickly identified a suspect in the case. A break in the case came Thursday when police received a tip that someone saw Jenkins making a phone call from a house in the 3600 block of Pulaski Highway in east Baltimore. County police set up surveillance across the street at a motel, and while doing so, officers watched Jenkins walk up to a house, where a woman let him in. "We did not know what his connection was to that house, if anything. We suspected that perhaps someone was harboring him there," Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said. Police waited for Jenkins to exit, and when he did, they gave chase. Inside the house, police found the woman who let Jenkins inside dead. City police announced Friday evening that Jenkins was charged with murder. City police said county police found the victim after they obtained a search and seizure warrant for the location. Evidence at the scene included obvious signs of trauma, leading investigators to believe the case is a homicide, police said. - (Black-on-white)

Paul A. Kingstro and his dead white wifePaul A. Kingstro and his dead white wifeSPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the woman on Wednesday afternoon. Jennifer A. Miller Kingstro, 48, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Her death is listed as a homicide. The other body found was that of Paul A. Kingstro, 45. That and the fact the home was locked and showed no signs of forced entry, told police that this was likely a murder-suicide. The attacks appeared random. The first to die was Sarah Anne Wierstad, a 24-year-old mother returning to her St. Paul residence. She apparently interrupted a burglary, and one of the suspects is accused of shooting her outside her home. Julie Zietlow felt sick when she heard that the four people who were charged in October in her daughter's death are now accused in a Minneapolis crime spree in the three hours after Wierstad lost her life. "I don't want them ever to be released again," Zietlow said Tuesday. Mike Freeman, who called the case "one of the most violent rampages I have seen in my nearly 18 years as county attorney," said he's looking for the same for the four people. He said his office is working closely with the Ramsey County attorney's office "to make sure that, if convicted, they spend the rest of their lives in prison."
The Ramsey County attorney's office quickly filed charges, saying Albert George McIntosh, 31, of Minneapolis was the man who had shot Wierstad. They charged him with murder. Prosecutors charged Alvin Rudolph Bell Jr., 25, of St. Louis Park, with aiding and abetting murder and Isiah Lee Harper, 26, of Minneapolis, with aggravated robbery and burglary. Michelle Lee Koester, 42, of Minneapolis was accused of misleading and obstructing investigators. - (Black-on-white)

Hamilton Co. prosecutor criticizes ruling to set aside death penalty for (black) killer (of White woman) in 1997
Rayshawn JohnsonShannon MarksCINCINNATI —Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters is criticizing a decision by the state's high court to overturn the death sentence of a man who beat a Cincinnati woman to death in 1997 during a robbery that netted $50. In a 4-3 ruling Tuesday, the court rejected Rayshawn Johnson's sentence based on his troubled upbringing and his subsequent remorse. Johnson was convicted of killing Shanon Marks with a baseball bat in 1997. He was sentenced to death in 1998, but appealed in 2006. At that time, a federal court agreed with Johnson that he had received ineffective assistance of counsel during the mitigation phase of his trial and instructed the state to commute Johnson’s death sentence or hold a new mitigation hearing. A new jury recommended death again in January 2012. Deters said the decision affects one's faith in the criminal justice system. He said the attack against Marks was horrific. "This poor family, my God,” Deters said during a news conference Tuesday. Deters didn’t hold back while talking about the state’s decision. "It is one of the most heinous crimes we've ever seen,” Deters said. He says the attack against Marks was horrific. Marks was found in her home on Nov. 12, 1997, bludgeoned to death. Johnson entered the home she shared with her husband, and beat her to death with a baseball bat. "She was a wonderful citizen of this community that was taken like that," Deters said. "By a 4-to-3 decision they've decided that the mitigation now, because we're blaming grandma, is not outweighed by the horrible aggravation of what happened to Shannon.” It is a decision that Joe Deters said will re-victimize Mark’s family. - (Black-on-white)

  • Jury to decide whether convicted black killer of (White) Shanon Marks should die - Nov 29, 2011
The final decision on whether Rayshawn Johnson will be executed will be resolved. Johnson was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1998 for the baseball bat bludgeoning death of his neighbor, 29-year-old Shanon Marks. Johnson lived in his grandmother's apartment that overlooked the home of Marks and her husband, who were planning to celebrate her third wedding anniversary that night. Johnson beat her with the bat 13 times, the last three in the head. Her husband found her body 13 hours later in a pool of her blood. In addition to the fatal blows that fractured her skull, she also suffered a broken jaw and a broken left arm. The assistant coroner in the case, Dr. Robert Pfalzgraf can’t forget it. “He said out of the 7,000 autopsies he’s done, he’ll never forget this because of her innocence” and how brutal it was.
