Two people entered Marquita’s Hair Salon, at 132 W. 69th St., around 1:40 p.m. and announced a robbery, police said. The female off-duty deputy shot one of the robbers and the other one fled. The deputy was not harmed. A woman who identified herself as the mother of the person shot, who would not spell her name, said she believed her son had been at school. "My baby was coming from school. I know he was. I dropped him off this morning. To go to school," she said. Relatives said he had been shot 12 times, though it's not clear where they got that information or how they knew it to be true. Afterward, relatives yelled at police and reporters — for telling lies, for leaving the body on the ground, for having shot the boy in the first place, for locking up black men but not white men.

(BLACK TRANS) Commission On LGBT Affairs Chair Resigns Following Ousting
black transPHILADELPHIA — The fledgling Mayor’s Commission on LGBT Affairs had a shake up this week when its members voted 13 to 3 to remove the chair. The commissioners claimed she “attacked” community members on social media. When Sharron Cooks was elected Chair of the 23-member Commission on LGBT Affairs in April, she became the first transgender woman to chair a city commission. But on Tuesday, during a two-hour emergency meeting, the commissioners ousted her, and on Wednesday “she decided to resign from the Commission,” said Amber Hikes, director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs. Hikes says the city received complaints about Cooks’ past and current social media posts, which allegedly “attacked” commissioners and community members. Cooks, a transwoman of color, did not respond to a request for comment, but told GPhilly she was not supported by Hikes’ office.

  • AC Grayling & Christopher Hitchens on WWII Bombings - Book Discussion on Among the Dead Cities
When Nuremberg was scouted in 1945 as a possible site for the Nazi war crime trials, an American damage survey of Germany described it as being "among the dead cities" of that country, for it was 90% destroyed, its population decimated, its facilities lost. As a place to put Nazis on trial, it symbolized the devastation Nazism brought upon Germany, while providing evidence ...
"Was the bombing offensive [against civilians in Germany and Japan] a crime against humanity," writes A. C. Grayling, "or was it justified by the necessities of war? These questions mark one of the great remaining controversies of the Second World War." Their resolution, which Grayling accomplishes with great respect and with a sense of urgency, is a vital contribution to the debate about how far governments can go in the name of national security. - (Commentary)
