Iryna Zarutska suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the East/West Boulevard light rail station in South End, Charlotte just before 10 p.m. Friday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Saturday. Zarutska had “recently arrived in the United States, seeking safety from the war and hoping for a new beginning,” according to a GoFundMe page set up to fundraise for the young woman’s aunt and other family members during the “heartbreaking time.” Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, was identified as the suspect and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Friday night. He has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, cops said. Brown has been arrested a slew of times since 2011 for felony larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and communicating threats, according to court records obtained by The Post. A man convicted of abducting a woman from a Florida Panhandle insurance office and killing her is scheduled to be executed Tuesday evening.
Kayle Bates, 67, is set to receive a lethal injection at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison near Starke under a death warrant signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. It would be Florida’s 10th death sentence carried out in 2025, further extending the state record for a single year. Two more executions are planned within the next month. Bates was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and attempted sexual battery in the June 14, 1982, killing of Janet White in Bay County in the Florida Panhandle. Bates abducted White from the insurance office where she worked, took her into some woods behind the building, attempted to rape her, stabbed her to death and tore a diamond ring from one of her fingers, according to court documents. Attorneys for Bates have filed appeals with the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court, as well as a federal lawsuit claiming DeSantis’ process for signing death warrants was discriminatory. NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A Virginia man convicted of shooting a New Jersey pastor to death outside her home in 2023 was sentenced Monday to life in prison.
Rashid Ali Bynum, 31, of Portsmouth, Virginia, appeared in a county courtroom in New Brunswick, New Jersey, that was filled with relatives and friends of the victim, Eunice Dwumfour. His lawyer, Michael Ashley, has said an appeal of the murder and weapons convictions is planned. Dwumfour, 30, was ambushed in her vehicle on Feb. 1, 2023, as she arrived home at an apartment complex in Sayreville, a central New Jersey town where she also served as a council member. She was deeply involved in a Nigerian church, Champions Royal Assembly, and married a fellow church pastor in Abuja weeks before her death. Prosecutors said Bynum had lived with Dwumfour and her child for a time before returning to the Sayreville home and shooting her 14 times. The motive has not been made clear. |

A Georgia woman was arrested for the murder and years-long identity theft of her girlfriend, a New Yorker who was found dismembered beyond recognition in a burning body bag nearly 18 years ago, according to authorities.
Angel Thompson has been charged with the December 2007 murder of Nicole Alston, a 24-year-old woman from Manhattan who was discovered cut into 13 pieces, with her hands, feet, and head missing in a burning body bag on the side of a quiet Georgia road, Fulton County officials announced at a press conference on Wednesday. “It took a true sociopath to do what happened here,” Clay Bryant, an investigator with the Troup County Sheriff’s Department, said. The missing parts of Alston’s body were never located, and the condition of her remains led to the 16-year lag in her identification, officials said. Investigators learned that Alston left the Big Apple in 2007 to live with Thompson, who was wanted at the time in New York for theft and identity fraud, according to documents obtained by Fox 5 News. Thompson allegedly trafficked Alston before she was murdered, and the two had an abusive, coercive relationship, authorities said. “We believe this victim was trafficked prior to her murder, that this involved classic domestic violence, where this young lady [Thompson] was basically not going to allow both her lover and, i hate to say such a nasty term, but her cash cow, the person that was bringing her money, go,” Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said at the press conference. |

Cops arrested a baby-faced teenager for the ruthless slashing of a 29-year-old woman on a Lower Manhattan train last week and revealed that the masked stranger nearly killed the victim when he sliced her up with a large kitchen knife after she refused to give up her bag.
Brandon Balfour, 18, was arraigned on attempted murder in the second degree, assault, and robbery charges on Sunday for repeatedly knifing the victim in the violent robbery on a northbound No. 3 train around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. When the straphanger refused to give up her bag and looked for help, the brute allegedly flashed a knife and slashed her on her left arm and elbow, both hands, and back, with a 14- to 16-inch kitchen knife, surveillance footage showed. The victim had a large amount of blood pooling from her back after the attack, according to the complaint. Balfour then allegedly took the woman’s cellphone and ditched the knife as he fled — leaving her slumped on the ground and bleeding as she appeared to call for help, court docs said. |

He was then sprung by Judge Jessica Green — who was appointed as a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge by Kentucky’s Democratic Gov. Her husband, Michael Hatcher, 65, was also wounded in the terrifying attack just before midnight Aug. 3, but managed to shoot Walker dead after retrieving a handgun from his vehicle. “This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind,” Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson told a press conference. Two days before the killings, Walker, of Pikesville, Maryland, rented a campsite at Endless Caverns in New Market, Va., and bought a large knife at a nearby Walmart, according to investigators. The day before the killing, Walker’s abandoned vehicle was discovered near Endless Caverns by Virginia State Police after cops say he rammed into the store there, but didn’t steal anything. Patrol vehicles and a drone were deployed, but there was no sign of him, and police had no idea of the horror that was about to unfold. “There was no indication of any violence or potential for any violence from the offender that the Virginia State Police became aware of throughout that investigation,” Hutcheson said at the press conference. ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two victims and their attacker are dead following a shooting in the parking lot of a grocery store in Crozet on Monday.
On the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 17, a man identified as 28-year-old Justin Barbour of Crozet entered the parking lot of a local Harris Teeter with a rifle, according to the Albemarle County Police Department. Police said that Barbour first shot at 43-year-old Peter Martin of Crozet, who was exiting the store. Martin died at the scene. Barbour then approached 68-year-old Diane Spangler of Afton in her vehicle and also shot her, according to police. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she later died. 20-year-old woman identified in Jennie Scher Road shooting Initially, police had said that the shooter was stopped by a “good Samaritan.” In a Feb. 18 update, authorities claårified that this person was an off-duty police officer. At the time of the shooting, that officer was exiting the Harris Teeter and had heard the gunshots. According to police, the officer “engaged the shooter [Barbour] with their personal weapon.” Barbour died at the scene. The officer was not hurt. An illegal immigrant from Mexico was allegedly drunk behind the wheel of a speeding SUV that crossed into incoming traffic and crashed head-on into a compact car, killing an innocent woman and her bright-eyed 11-year-old daughter, New Jersey authorities said.
Raul Luna-Perez, 43, has been living in Red Bank, N.J., since early 2023, federal sources told The Post. When and where he allegedly snuck into the U.S. is not known. The suspect has been roaming free despite two DUI arrests in March and April, and a domestic violence arrest in 2023, according to records. Luna-Perez’s Dodge Durango slammed into Maria Pleitez’s Nissan Sentra in the horrific July 26 wreck in Lakewood, NJ, according to local prosecutors. The 42-year-old mother was killed instantly. Her youngest daughter, Dayanara Cortes, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, perished soon after arriving at the hospital. A second, unidentified 11-year-old girl riding in the back seat at the time of the 11:20 p.m. collision, was also injured and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. She has since been upgraded to stable. Luna-Perez walked away with minor injuries. A monster Texas dad murdered his 7-year-old adopted son and stuffed his lifeless little body in a washing machine because the child ate his donut sticks.
Jemaine Thomas, 45, will now spend 50 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the gruesome killing of little Troy Koehler on July 28, 2022. “I need to get the [locks]. I’m going to end up kill[ing] him,” Thomas fumed in text messages before acting upon his threats, according to prosecutors. The little boy’s dead body was found in a bloodied top-load washing machine, according to KPRC 2. Koehler suffered from asphyxiation, blunt-force trauma and possible drowning. |
